Festive atmosphere for alcohol lovers

It is a festive atmosphere for liquor lovers in the Telugu states. With liquor sales at a record high in 2024-25, the excise department is making arrangements to maintain that level this year. As part of this, steps have been taken to bring new liquor brands into the market. It is noteworthy that there has been a huge response to applications from liquor manufacturing companies. With expectations that market demand is increasing across the state, the excise department has taken the initiative with the aim of increasing government revenue. The sector is preparing for the entry of new liquor by providing opportunities for domestic and foreign brands.

New brands enter the liquor market

Telangana Beverages Corporation Limited (TGBCL) has invited national and international manufacturers to supply new liquor brands. In response, a total of 92 companies have applied to introduce 604 types of liquor brands. Out of these, 273 are foreign brands and 331 are indigenous brands. 45 old companies already in the market have applied for 218 brands,47 new companies have sought approval for 386 brands.This is the first time that applications for new brands have been received on a large scale in the state. This has the potential to further increase competition in the liquor market.

Growth in alcohol sales – increase in income

It is known that the state government earned Rs. 34,800 crore from liquor sales in 2023-24. The same amount was earned in 2024-25 at Rs. 34,600 crore. According to the Excise Department, an additional Rs. 264 crore was earned through applications, along with license fees for new shops. Compared to the previous financial year, there was a 2 percent growth in liquor sales and a 7 percent growth in revenue.

Beer price hike – efforts to establish new bars

As part of the economic target, the government has already slightly increased the prices of beer. It has also decided to give permission to 25 new bars. As part of this, 32 domestic companies have applied to supply 149 types of liquor, while 13 foreign companies have come forward to supply 69 foreign brands. The latest applications include 204 foreign liquor brands and 182 Indian-made liquor brands.

Excise department officials are being very careful in granting permits to new brands. They are examining the qualifications, quality standards, and market demand of the respective companies. Also, they are taking strategic decisions regarding prices so that they do not burden consumers and increase government revenue.
