South Korea: Elections to replace ousted president in South Korea
President Yoon Suk-yeol's impeachment: Constitutional Court confirms
South Korea will hold a snap presidential election on June 3, 2025, to replace the recently ousted President Yoon Suk-yeol . The Constitutional Court has ruled that Yoon Suk-yeol should be removed from office due to martial law imposed on the country in December . By law, a new president must be elected within 60 days of Yoon's impeachment.

Political polarization: Clash between the two major parties
The election reflects the deep political polarization in South Korea. There could be a fierce competition between the two major political parties, the People Power Party (Yoon Suk-yeol's party) and the Democratic Party.
The Democratic Party
may nominate Lee Jae-myung as the Democratic Party's candidate. Lee, who lost to Yoon in 2022, has further strengthened his position as party leader. It is worth noting that while he has previously dealt a setback to the People Power Party, many Democratic Party members voted against the National Assembly's martial law decision. About 10 prominent politicians from the People Power Party may run for their candidacy. The most important of these candidates are:
Kim Moon-soo - Minister of Labor, Oh Se-hoon - Mayor of Seoul, Hong Jun-pyo - Mayor of Daegu, Han Dong-hoon - former party leader, and Ahn Cheol-soo - senior legislator. READ ALSO: Donald Trump: Trump in the decision to lift tariffs on several countries?
